Howdy dear readers, my name is Andrés. I’m currently the youngest and newest member of the Tarful Team, and this is the story of how I got here.
It had been one month since I moved to Caracas to do a Master’s degree in Computer science. One day I saw on one of the walls of the University a flyer of Tarful looking for a new team member a web developer. The little neat black icon with cursive letters of the Tarful logo printed in a piece of paper caught my attention. Like with every aspect of my life, curiosity got the better of me. Simón, one of the founders of Tarful, was a few steps away with a handful of flyers.
That was the first time I talked with him. He told me that they were looking for a new developer and that, if I was interested, I should apply for the job. The team were all young, working in a cool office with some interesting projects. That night when I arrived home I thought Why not? I have some experience in web dev and some extra money could be good. So I decided to send an email with my resume.
A couple of days later I heard back from Simón about an interview for a job as a front end developer at Tarful. We had a video conference call from Chicago to Caracas with Sal, the other founder of Tarful. We talked about my experience, technical capabilities, and aspirations. After the interview I thought I did well, and apparently that was the case…
I wasn’t prepared for that final call. While I was walking in the campus of the university, donned with my new Star Wars t-shirt, and listening to a Weezer tune, I heard my cell phone ringing. It was Simón wanting to meet at the office that day in a few hours. I rushed to take a bus, trying to get there in time, and worried thinking about the frantic traffic of Caracas. I barely arrived in time.
When arrived at the offices and I saw the Impact Hub I was astonished: the beautiful polished wood doors, the little chairs made with beer boxes, the hip drawings on the walls… Simón gave me a brief tour and then we sat for a talk.
Just like a regular interview, at first he just wanted to know more about me and my interests.
“Uhmm… I don’t know, I like to read and go to the movies, I guess”, I answered a little hesitantly.
“What good movies have you seen recently?” he asked.
To which I replied without hesitation: “The Force Awakens”.
“Oh, you like Star wars?” he asked with a glimmer in his eye.
And that was it for me. I was done for.
I geekily unzipped my hoodie showing the logo of Star Wars in my t-shirt, proving the hardcore fan that I am, and to my surprise, he also unzips his jacket, and lo’ and behold, he had Star Wars t-shirt too!
We laughed and exchange a “how cool are we?” look – we all know the truth though. Two weeks later, I was proudly starting my new job at Tarful.
So far, being part of the team or a Tarfuler has been a thrilling, challenging, and a really fun experience. Working with this little group of young, and not so young – cough…Jomag…cough – creative, and talented professionals that really care about their craft has been a great opportunity for me.
The force is strong with Tarful 😉
